I’m a Dutch philosopher and publisher at Noordboek. Subjects I’m working on, are animal politics, history of philosophy in the Low Countries, education (bildung) and popularisation of philosophy. In 2022 I published Denkers en dwalers, een geschiedenis van de filosofie in de Lage Landen (Wonderers and wanderers, a History of Philosophy in the Low Countries). In the same year Marthe Kerkwijk and I published De kinderen van Chronos, a young adult book on Greek philosophy. In 2015 I did my PhD, which lead to Een beestachtige geschiedenis van de filosofie (A Beastly History of Philosophy). Here you can find a summary.

Some of the chapters of my earlier book from 2009, Democratie voor dieren (Democracy for animals), were translated (by Rik Schraag). You’ll find them here.

I’m presently working on legal personhood for animals and other living beings. Meanwhile I keep promoting the agoramodel, which was first developed by René Gude, the Dutch ’thinker of the nation’ and my close collegue. I’ve helped to develop the model, which is a educational tool that helps you to broaden your scope and to find new angles in debates.
